Goals:

Children learn a safe method of tasting plants
Children learn how to pick leaves and flowers without damaging plants
Children become curious and discerning about different types of plants.
Children learn the basic skill of comparing plant parts.
Children begin to name plants.
Children experience different human uses of plants.
Children connect the garden with food and drink.
Children are more confident, respectful and safe around plants.

I realize the children will not remember much true info, but they will get some skills and become more aware. PS - The "Reading Room" is a cool covered meeting place so kids are not in the sun too long. For those of you who attended last year, yes, we are doing much the same over again! This time there will be deeper memory and participation - the kids won't mind the repeat!

Schedule:

Friday - set up tents and get kids off to bed.

Saturday
9:30 - Meeting and Greeting - How to taste and smell plants; How to pick a leaf or flower, or berry.
10:00 - Taste and Smell Walk
10:30 - Gathering our snacks from the garden (peas, greens, tea)
11:00 - Snacks and tea (talking about the food we are eating); Free period - reading, napping, drawing, beach visit

Saturday night - shared dinner, visit around fire, solstice candles.

Sunday

Kind Words

The Right Book at the Right Time

If any book was ever published at the right moment, it's [Food Security for the Faint of Heart].  Rising food prices - and in more and more parts of the world rising food scarcity - trigger our most primal fears.  Robin Wheeler's book will calm you down and make your eating life simultaneously cheaper, healthier, and more elegant.

Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy
Food Security for the Faint of Heart

I bought this for my husband. He loved it. I read it and enjoyed it as well. It's a great little book to help anyone who is looking to be a little more in control of their food sources. From Amazon Reviews

A Delightful Read

(Gardening for the Faint of Heart), Wheeler’s first book, is a delightful read, full of humour and down-to-earth advice.
