Announcement

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Edible Landscapes and most Sustainable Living Arts School classes (except those listed below), workshops and nursery sales will be closed until the fall.  The website will be updated intermittently as required.  Thank you for your continued support!

Sustainable Living Arts School

At the Sustainable Living Arts School, we wish to close the gap between those with particular skills in the sustainable arts and those wishing to hone their abilities, by providing learning opportunities, existing landscape samples, and time for networking.

The Sustainable Living Arts School will assist learners to be better equipped to deal with changes (both chosen and those that may be thrust upon them) in their lives and environment, that they may be confident in living a healthy and happy life within the restrictions of what the planet can actually offer, and capable of creating a new standard of normalcy within their own communities.

About the Sustainable Living Arts School

When I first heard the term "permaculture" about twelve years ago, I was excited about getting plants and establishing a garden. But the wonderful flora found in books like Plants for a Future were hard to find. I began to satisfy my urge to propagate while making young samples from every interesting grape and edible green I could find, while I increased my gene pool by looting the fabulous seed bank that is Chilterns seeds. After a visit to Richters in Ontario, I had to toss all those silly clothes out of my luggage to make room for the new sorrels and herbs and little trees. Almost immediately, my casual little plant business became Edible Landscapes, and I began the serious work of breeding out trays of unusual plants.

Location of Classes

Most classes will take place at the Edible Landscapes teaching farm at 1732 Pell Road, Roberts Creek, British Columbia.  However, some classes may move to various farms in the area.  We encourage carpooling, and plan classes in an orderly physical progression, with time after the first venue to arrange carpooling to a second one.  All venues will be near a bus route.

Kind Words

Food Scarcity is No Myth

Food security is a big issue, and growing bigger and more challenging by the minute--not just for people in the developing world, but for those of us lucky enough to live where food is abundant. If you're wondering where you would find food in an emergency--a natural disaster, an extended power outage, a labor strike--this book is for you. And if you're planning to grow some of your own groceries (who isn't, in these lean times?), you'll find plenty of help in this smart, funny and easy-to-read book.

Wheeler includes information based on personal hands-on experience about dealing with food supplies in sudden emergencies, stockpiling, buying organic, managing a garden (from seedtime to harvest and points in between), and wild foraging (for those hungry souls caught in the lurch without a pantry or a garden). She also offers suggestions for finding and preparing plant medicines, harvesting rainwater, and building a food community in your neighborhood. Very helpful: ten techniques for storing food and "compromise" gardens for people who lack the time, space, money, and energy for large-scale gardening.

While you may be able to find more detailed information elsewhere, Food Security for the Faint of Heart is a great place to begin. It will help you start thinking, planning, and preparing for the day when food may be suddenly scarce and you still have the urge to go on eating.
